Dunvegan Keep

Posted in Portrait, Wedding on April 28th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

There’s a very cool place in South Austin that I highly recommend: Dunvegan Keep. The owner has hand crafted all of the decorations and the plants to give a very “elsewhere” look and feel to the environment there. If you are looking for a fun place to go for a bridal or engagement portrait, or even for a whole wedding, this might be it.

A Photograph Never Grows Old

Posted in Portrait on April 27th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

I found this on the interwebs today; I think it really says something important:

“A photograph never grows old. You and I change, people change all through the months and years but a photograph always remains the same. How nice to look at a photograph of mother or father taken many years ago. You see them as you remember them. But as people live on, they change completely. That is why I think a photograph can be kind.”

“Painting”

Posted in Portrait on April 24th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

When I create a photograph, I’m usually just looking at the things I can see at the moment: light, shadow, lines, shapes, contrast, texture and eyes. But sometimes I look at the photograph later and see a fun abstraction of the surrounding environment that I find pleasing. I can add a “painterly” feel to the image using the computer and some time and effort that just works in some cases. Of course, it’s only pleasing to some people, so I make it an option on some of my work. I’ll post more like it from time to time. Let me know what you think!

Relay for Life

Posted in Event on April 17th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Sometimes I get to participate in something bigger than just my own business; a few weeks back I was able to contribute by photographing the Hutto Relay for Life. These guys participate in the American Cancer Society efforts to find a cure for cancer by walking to raise money. I was able to experience parts of the event first-hand and capture some of the moments of the all-night relay; it was awesome!

Besides the actual relay, one of the highlights for me was to see the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets post the Colors as a part of the kick-off ceremony. Yes, I’m a graduate of TAMU!

Improvisation Wins

Posted in Portrait on April 15th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Sometimes you have to improvise to make the moment “work”. I was photographing a family that had several young children and they were more than a little antsy. So, in order to make the shot, I grabbed a rock and shoved it under the rocker so they could be still for just the few seconds I needed to make this photograph. I could of course edit it out, but then the picture wouldn’t tell the same story! Life is filled with moments and they move so quickly sometimes you have to jam a rock in there somewhere…

A Texas Location for a Photograph

I went looking to see if a bridal portrait could work at the

park area near Memorial Park in Round Rock and came across this spot. It is simply Texas at it’s best for peacefulness, trees and rugged rocks. I love this area; go check it out if you’re looking to get a portrait done somewhere in the area. It’s very simple to get to, just take Chisolm Trail road South from Hwy 79 and park at the creek. The location is just West of the rail road tracks.

Show-off

Ok, so I have an iPhone and this new blog. Turns out, it is possible to create entries in the blog from the iPhone. How cool is that! It means I’ll have a better shot at keeping it updated with what I’m doing.

Yes, I wrote and published this post using the iphone…

Funny Story

Posted in Equipment on April 9th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Well, I have to confess, sometimes I get a little confused. I was recharging some of my flash and camera batteries today and needed to move my camera bag to accommodate all the other bags to be worked with. So, after moving it around I was surprised (actually, quite surprised) to hear a constant “clunk – clunk – clunk – clunk …” sound of a rather ominous nature coming from somewhere behind the camera bag. At least, that’s what I though I heard. I listened, thinking it was some odd piece of household machinery I had forgotten about, buried deep in the wall, or perhaps in the bathroom on the other side of the wall.

Still the noise.

After a moment of punctuated slience, I realized it was my camera, making the muted thud of a shutter released inside the bag. I had left it on and when I shifted the bag the padding pressed one of the shutter release buttons. It had proceeded to dutifully take 30 frames or so of inky blackness :-) The bag’s padding had muted the sound sufficiently to make it not really sound like what I’m familiar with since I’ve never actually taken pictures with the camera still in the bag…

Two fun guys hanging out at the Movie Night...

Two fun guys hanging out at the Movie Night...

Otherwise known as WCCAC, this is an awesome place in Georgetown for kids who need an advocate in difficult situations. I went along to their Movie Night fundraiser held back in February and photographed the donors all having a great time together at the Georgetown City Lights Theatres. True Grit was the movie for the evening, with food and drink served ahead of time in the lobby and adjoining room. CJ, one of the many friends of the WCCAC, dressed up and posed with anyone wanting a photo with the Duke. He was a hoot!

Check out the WCCAC website to see more about their mission and to find out how you can help. And take a look at a slideshow from the evening back over on the imageclectic website.

First day of the rest of my blog

Posted in Uncategorized on April 8th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Well, I’ve finally convinced myself to start blogging about my life as a photographer! Yea! Yes, I know everyone does it. And I know I’m not much of a writer. But, I’m going to write and post anyway, to allow a more real-time view into what I love to do, who I’m working with, what I’m working on and where I am in the world. It’s going to be great fun and I hope you’ll tag along for the ride.
