The ArtistSue makes beautiful and interesting art with acrylic and paper. She allowed me to capture her in her studio, working on a collage piece.
The Glass SmithGail at Salado Glassworks crafts amazing glass art pieces. He works in a visitor-friendly gallery with three furnaces and a team of talented artists to create functional and artistic pieces. Watching the team work together is like seeing a performance; they meld their talents together, ebbing and flowing through each piece as needed. Sometimes only one person, sometimes two or even three come together, almost without words, to melt, pull, mold, trim, cut and blow glass elements together into a final piece. A beautiful dance.
The WriterA portrait set back in the 1940's showing a writer at work in his environment.
The WeaverPortrait of Donna, weaving at her loom. The space is cramped and the work is slow, but she makes beautiful tapestries. Just watching the shuttles zip back and forth is mesmerizing and fun to see. Such a complicated process!
The Master PrinterKathy owns an amazing printing facility and set of galleries in Austin; she is a master printmaker specializing in intaglio printing with etched plates pressed using a set of artist'-created negative plates that are inked by the printmaker by hand and pressed into the paper successively to create a final print. This is an ancient process that can yield amazing art. I completely enjoyed my time with her; she walked me through the process of printing and let me photograph the creation of several printer proofs as she worked with a specific piece.
The Book MakerBrett makes wonderful hand-crafted journals using interesting papers, cloth, leather and sometimes wood. He uses mostly hand-made jigs and clever technique to build these books for himself and others. He writes every day.
The Pot HandbuilderRick works in his studio space to create hand-built pots with textures and shapes that are always unusual and fun. This portrait was made with him working a pot, adding and subtracting textures and imprints to get just the right look.
The Welder-ArtistLori is an artist who welds to make her art. We worked in her specially-constructed welding studio (fire-proof, vented) to craft this portrait of her using a MIG welder. I love the colors that the process gives off; that's the only light in the scene!
The Jewelry Maker Sue works in her home studio to hand-craft unique jewelry for her Easy shop. She uses found materials and fun trinkets from wherever she can find them.
